Mount Vernon, Washington, within Skagit County, is located in northwest Washington State, in the heart of the fertile Skagit Valley. Mount Vernon is located 60 miles north of Seattle and 90 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with both of these major cities approximately a one-hour drive. Amtrak service also runs to Mount Vernon, while Skagit Transit provides public transportation in and around the city.
This city of 31,000 residents was named for President George Washington’s Potomac River estate. Fed by the powerful Skagit River, Mount Vernon is surrounded by world-famous tulip fields which draw more than one million visitors each year from across the world. Other nearby natural attractions include the San Juan Islands, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, and North Cascade National Park.
Mount Vernon was first settled by loggers who were drawn to the region’s vast forests. Mount Vernon was made the county seat of Skagit County in 1884, and in 1889 Mount Vernon was incorporated. As the county seat, Mount Vernon hosts the Skagit County Superior Court which handles felony criminal and civil cases.
Primarily a farming community until the 1970s, Mount Vernon is experiencing significant new commercial and residential growth. Downtown Mount Vernon is known for abundant boutiques and antique shops, and is home to the historic Lincoln Theatre, built in 1926 as a vaudeville and silent movie house, and currently operating as a movie theater.
The Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon opened in 1958. Today, the hospital provides comprehensive regional healthcare services, recently merging with Skagit Valley Medical Center, a physician-owned medical clinic, to provide outpatient care through several area Skagit regional clinics. The Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center in Mount Vernon is a separate facility dedicated to state-of-the art cancer care.
